Caring for our Environment

At Abisko Lodge we are making a simple commitment to consider how our everyday activity and choices affect the environment. We have followed the guidelines set out below by the website “What’s My Carbon Footprint.”

Efficient Appliances
When we replace an appliance, we look for products with an ENERGY STAR® label. We focus on lighting, electronics, heating and cooling equipment and appliances.

Be Water Wise
We repair leaky taps and toilets promptly and have installed water saving taps and showers when replacement is required. We encourage guests to use towels up to 3 times to reduce the need for laundering.

Be Smart with Power Management
We have adjusted our power management settings for our computers to conserve energy and turn off appliances when not in use. We have an over ride system to turn of heating when it is not needed and have insulated all of our hot water systems. We try to turn off lights in unoccupied rooms.

Replace Low-Efficiency Light bulbs
We have replaced incandescent bulbs with energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL).

Buy Seasonal Produce
We are fortunate here in Canterbury and we are able to by local produce that we think tastes better and it’s kinder to the earth. By buying items grown or produced within 100 miles and we have reduce the amount of diesel fuel needed to ship food.

Thinking Before we Drive…
We organise tasks and make sure that if we have to drive anywhere we make the most of our journey. We can organise shuttles to and from Christchurch and also to and from the ski field, sharing transport reduces the number of vehicles on the road.

Reduce, Reuse & Recycle
We recycle cans, bottles, plastic bags, and newspapers. And we support recycling by purchasing items that are reusable and/or recyclable. Recycle bins are located throughout the complex and we focus on separating rubbish that has not been separated and making sure it goes to the right place.

Spreading the Word

We encourage our guests to recycle and reuse where possible. We make recycling bins available and accessible. We also encourage feedback and suggestions to help us reduce our carbon footprint
